What a waste of time music must seem for those who have forgotten what being in love is! Those who rush through words and sentences in the drill of modern communication technology manage to provide information quite efficiently but do not savor it. Both love and music, on the other hand, desire a mystery that requires the lover to stop and delight in its depth, rejoicing in the intimacy with the Presence that cannot be reduced to the mere words we use to describe it. Thus sacred music, the expression of the deepest human yearning for the most profound Mystery of Love, creates in us this special dimension where we may be permeated and transformed by the Eternal beauty of God himself. In the face of eternity the last thing a lover needs is a watch.
Since their founding in 1216, the Friars Preachers have made music their way of prayer. The Divine Office - communal prayers offered several times a day - as well as Sung Masses, resounded first in magnificent Gothic churches of medieval Europe and then spread around all the continents along with the Friars who, following their founder's charism, have striven to carry the Gospel to the furthest ends of the world, even to the Last Frontier! Although Gregorian chant is especially cherished by them, Dominicans believe that the beauty of sacred music does not belong to one particular genre but rather flows from a basic requirement different musical styles can meet, which might be summed up as, "it's all about God, and He's a Mystery". Inexpressible and ineffable, the Mystery of God is always ahead of us, approached but never comprehended, and therefore our liturgical music filled with awe and love for Him should reflect that fundamental humility.
The selection of music we are presenting on this CD is intended to introduce you into that variety of musical genres, taking you on a journey through the ecclesiastical year from Advent into Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost, through Ordinary Time. It comes from different sources: St. Albert's Priory in Oakland, CA, where the Dominican brothers of the Western Dominican Province pursue their degree in theology and study for priesthood; Holy Trinity Priory in Krakow, Poland, the house of studies and liturgical center of the Polish Province; and Sylvanès Abbey in France, where a composer and a Dominican friar, Fr. André Gouzes, almost 40 years ago founded a quasi-monastic community of laymen praying together and working on the preservation of Christian cultural patrimony. In all those places music is not merely an artistic performance, it rather springs forth from a deep desire of the People of God who want to immerse their very lives in the unspeakable beauty of God who makes Himself tangibly present in the liturgical action. It is our hope that, even though none of us in this project is a professional singer, we managed to share with you what we ourselves have found a great spiritual help: the music that resounds with the presence of the "Radiant Light, Eternal Joy of the Father, Holy and blessed Jesus Christ".
